Complete Guide to Performing Umrah 2026: Step-by-Step Procedure for First-Time Pilgrims
9 min read

From entering Ihram at the Meeqat to completing Tawaf, Sa'i between Safa and Marwah and shaving or trimming the hair, this guide walks first-time pilgrims through the entire Umrah procedure in plain language.
Before You Travel
Clear any outstanding debts, seek forgiveness from family, learn the basic rites and memorise the Talbiyah. Carry your passport, visa copy, vaccination certificate, hotel voucher and a small amount of Saudi Riyals in cash. Pack two white unstitched Ihram sheets for men and simple, modest clothing for women.
Step 1 — Entering Ihram at the Meeqat
Pilgrims flying from Pakistan usually enter Ihram before crossing the Meeqat, either at home, at the airport or on board when the captain announces it. Perform Ghusl or Wudu, wear the Ihram, pray two Rak'ah, then make the intention for Umrah and begin reciting the Talbiyah: Labbayk Allahumma Labbayk.
Step 2 — Arriving at Masjid al-Haram
Enter the Haram with your right foot, keep your gaze lowered and recite the entry dua. On first seeing the Kaaba, raise your hands and make dua — this is one of the moments when supplication is accepted. Men uncover the right shoulder (Idtiba) before starting Tawaf.
Step 3 — Tawaf: Seven Circuits of the Kaaba
Begin at the Black Stone corner, point towards it saying Bismillah Allahu Akbar, and circle the Kaaba anticlockwise seven times. Men perform Ramal — a brisk walk — in the first three circuits if space allows. There is no fixed dua for each circuit; supplicate freely in any language.
Step 4 — Two Rak'ah at Maqam Ibrahim & Zamzam
After the seventh circuit, cover both shoulders and pray two Rak'ah behind Maqam Ibrahim if space permits, otherwise anywhere in the Haram. Then drink Zamzam water to your fill and make dua before heading to Safa.
Step 5 — Sa'i Between Safa and Marwah
Climb Safa, face the Kaaba, and recite the verse of Safa and Marwah. Walk to Marwah — that is one lap. Men jog briskly between the green markers. Seven laps end at Marwah. Wheelchairs and electric carts are available for the elderly and unwell.
Step 6 — Halq or Taqsir
Men shave the head completely (Halq, greater reward) or trim evenly (Taqsir); women trim a fingertip length from the end of their hair. With this, Umrah is complete and all Ihram restrictions are lifted.
Practical Tips for Pakistani Pilgrims
Perform Tawaf after Isha or before Fajr to avoid the heaviest crowds and the midday heat. Keep a hotel card in your pocket, agree on a meeting point with your group, use the Nusuk app for Rawdah permits, and stay hydrated with Zamzam throughout the day.
